Museums in Albany

Albany has an active community of artists from the very beginning. In order to restore the various works of these artists a number of museums have grown in Albany. There are several art and private museums located around Lark Street and Madison Avenue which provide a outlet to the locally created art. Irish American Heritage Museum: this Albany Museum preserves the Irish American culture. The museum hosts programs dealing with the heritage of sons and daughters in American culture.

New York State Museum: this Albany Museum reflects the history, geology and cultural development of New York City. The museum has a collection of fossil plants and animals, some 170 native birds, the 19th century fire fighting machines and the native people of New York.

Albany Institute of History and Art: is the house of 17th and 18th century paintings, furniture, prints, sculptures, drawings and historical artifacts of colonial Albany and Hudson Valley.

Henry Hudson Planetarium: where you can explore the stars, planets galaxies and constellations through a variety of interactive shows. It also conducts shows on Egyptian astronomy.

USS Slater DE-766-DEHM: the battle ship belonging to 563 Destroyer Escorts during World War II has been restored for public view from April to November. You can go inside the ship and also organize overnight camps. The naval reunion groups hold their reunions at the ship.

Historic Cherry Hill: the Cherry Hill built in 1787 is a huge mansion where a huge collection of antiques, textiles and historical artifacts are on display.

Museum of Modern Art has a huge collection of modern paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural designs etc. it has a big library and archives relating the history of modern art.
The other commonly visited museums in Albany are Empire State Aerosciences Museum, The Children’s Museum of Science and Technology, Schenectady Museum and Rensselaer Co Historical Society.
