New York State Executive Mansion, Albany

The official residence of the Governors of New York State is the New York State Executive Mansion located at Eagle Street in Albany New York. Till today as many as 29 Governors of New York State along with their families have stayed in this mansion. The New York State Executive Mansion, Albany was established in 1856 as a banker’s private home. However in 1875 Samuel Tilden was the first Governor to stay in this Mansion. The New York State purchased the Mansion in 1877. The New York State Executive Mansion has undergone a major makeover in 1885.

Over the years the various Governors have stayed in the mansion and have left a mark in its dignity and elegance. Theodore Roosevelt has constructed a gymnasium in the Mansion while Franklin Roosevelt had constructed a swimming pool. Nelson Rockefeller installed a tennis court and Alfred E. Smith had built a zoo in the New York State Executive Mansion. Some of the Governors used the Mansion only for official purposes only.
The Executive Mansion Prevention Society was established to restore the New York State Executive Mansion, Albany.

Grover Cleveland, Franklin Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt are the three Presidents of USA who had stayed in the New York State Executive Mansion, Albany during their tenure of Governor of New York State.

Levi Morton and Nelson Rockefeller were the two governors who later became vice-presidents of USA stayed in the State Executive Mansion.

Presently George Pataki is staying in the New York State Executive Mansion, Albany along with his family.
On the second floor of the Mansion in the exhibit space you can see the wheelchair used by Franklin Roosevelt.

From September to June only on Thursday guided tours are conducted for free. School children can also avail such tours. The duration of the tours is one hour.
