Schuyler Mansion, Albany

The Schuyler Mansion, Albany was built in 1761 just inside Albany’s southern boundary line. General Philip Schuyler used to stay in the Schuyler Mansion

By 1760 Philip Schuyler began to acquire the large tract of land on the south of Albany. The property known as “the pastures” runs from Beaverkill in the south to the southern city line and to the South Pearl Street in the west to today’s Delaware Avenue.

At the center of this huge property Philip Schuyler built his house under the direction of his friend John Bradstreet.

This elegant Schuyler Mansion was built before the American Revolution and is a mark of pomp and grandeur where General Schuyler and his wife Catherine stayed along with their eight children.

You can a tour this grand mansion and learn about the 18th century political and social life. In the drawing room you can see how George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and others were entertained by one of the most prominent Schuyler family. The drawing room also exhibits the marriage of General Schuyler’s daughter Elizabeth with Alexander Hamilton in 1780.

The Schuyler Mansion, Albany was a hub of military strategizing, social parties and an active family life.

The Schuyler Mansion, Albany has a huge collection of colonial New York and New England furniture, Chinese porcelain and English glassware belonging to the Schuyler family.

Today people can pay a visit to the Schuyler Mansion. For a group of 45 you have to reserve your tours which are held for 30-45 minutes. Group tours are available all through the year. The cost of the tours for the adults is $4 and for seniors it is $3. Children below 12 are free. The timing to visit the Schuyler Mansion is from Wednesday to Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. temporary exhibitions are organized at the mansion focusing on General Schuyler’s life.
