Historic Cherry Hill, Albany

The Historic Cherry Hill, Albany was built by Philip and Maria Van Rensselaer in 1787. Five generations of the same family stayed in this mansion from the 18th century to the 20th century.
Catherine Putman Rankin and her family used to stay in Cherry Hill from 1884 to 1963. Catherine had an elite lifestyle glorifying her Van Rensselaer family heritage.

In 1963 when the last Van Rensselaer family member, Emily Rankin died the house and its possessions were transformed to a public museum. The Historic Cherry Hill Collection is a complete assembly of personal papers and material possessions of the Van Rensselaer family over five generation of stay. As a result the Historic Cherry Hill is known as a “preservation site”.

The visitors can visit Cherry Hill in groups or personally guided tours. There is no barrier to visit the historical site.

During the 176 years of their stay at the Historic Cherry Hill, the family has collected over 20,000 objects. The Historic Cherry Hill, Albany possesses all these items along with 30,000 manuscripts which directly relates to our past.

The Historic Cherry Hill, Albany has a huge collection of very rare materials of American culture. The main intention of the family was to possess many items with little interest in throwing them. The Van Rensselaer family had a unique characteristic. The family has kept a record of the history of all the materials possessed including any change of furniture, decoration, any furniture movement and its restoration.
