Located on the southern side of the confluence of the Mohawk and the Hudson river, the city of Albany is the capital of the state of New York and the county seat of the Albany County. One of the oldest cities of the United States, Albany was originally settled by the Dutch during the early seventeenth century, who named the area Fort Orange. It was only in 1664 that the British acquired the city and renamed it Albany in honor of James II, Duke of Albany. Almost a century later, Albany became the state capital of New York in 1777.
